  • Yeah… I don't think I'll be buying anymore Rockstar stuff anymore (more like stopped playing V in 2015) until they stop acting like a corporate ***star business.

    Back until after GTA IV R* was about quality games.
    I fucking hate Rockstar for that 10 year copyright music shit, my guess is they didn't like IV as it wasn't as popular as they'd liked. Back when I played console games almost every waking moment I remember about a quarter of my friends not having played it

  • See from my perspective, it's an artist's habit to want to stay until it's done or closely finished. I am currently in game design school where I do 3d modeling, concept art, character design etc and I have even put some decent hours in as a student. I have a philosophy that many artists share that is their work needs to get done as soon as possible. This isnt something like an office job crunching numbers all day its art. Artists have a reputation for dedicating a lot of time to actually finish something. That isnt to say there arnt studios who over work their workers, but many voluntarily stay to finish their work

  • I worked for 8 years at a hi tech company in Silicon Valley. The company never had mandatory overtime, but they did encourage staff to help meet quarterly production goals. The primary means of encouragement was that quarterly profit sharing was based on total products shipped by quarter end. As quarters tended to start slow then ramp up in the last couple of weeks, the public chart of what was shipped weekly was a parabolic curve. That's when most of the overtime occurred.
    I asked one coworker once, "Is there life after #companyname?"
    His reply: "Not at quarter end."
    So it's not just games industry, although that might be more intense as it's gated by projected ship time of long term projects. Still, the mindset is there. And if bonuses and/or profit-sharing are tied to said targets, then, yeah, a lot of people are going to put in killer hours so they can participate in that profit. They're not forced to, technically, but the unspoken "or else" is very much understood by staff.
