I Actually Read SAO! – Basement Book Club (Sword Art Online Progressive)

SAO Progressive reboots Sword Art Online to follow Kirito and Asuna’s adventures through Aincrad floor by floor. Is that change an improvement? I have some thoughts… and so do a lot of you!

Well, Guild Wars is a game that doesn't really have defined roles for player characters. There's what you're best at and then there's a bunch of other stuff you can do.

  • 6:50 I kinda wish the beater-plotpoint was just make internationally illegal to stick around. Kirito is not a cheater, beater literally sounds like beta so it does not change shit(Even tho that might be diffrent in japanese) and it never made sence for me that instead of dissolving the controvercy, he enhances it and later they say "he is one of those beaters" like there was even one other guy….oh, sorry guys. I just got a negative flashback from the anime and had to yell at the wall for a sec.

  • Argo is waaaaay more involved in the stories of the games. Also, I've been playing through the games.(Most after all the patches and dlc stuff added to the games and having the stories being complete. Writing wise…..these games are good, the games themselves are decent, ranking the games from what I've seen and played. (Except Lycoris as I'm waiting to play the new game.)

Fatal bullet > Hollow Realization > Hollow Fragment > Lost song.

They fix issues with the main timeline and there is a decent continuity. Even the dlcs are canon in the gameverse. As well with them being games, the characters have more breathing room and able to grow. Most of the girls, while still having crushes on kirito, but they actually feel like like their friends first and have reasons outside of kirito why they're friends and why they play together.

Characters are deeper and more complex than first appearence. My favorite character is Strea. A MHCP(mental heath counselor program) like yui. And at first she seems just for fanservice as she's very touchy feely. But she is like that for many people, and giving hugs to those she's close to, she's very open about her feelings and how she wants to make others feel better.

She's not dumb, she's able to understand how and why someone will act as they do, and genuinely wants them to feel better and she tries her best to comfort. Also she's confident and knows how attractive she is. Plus she's a great sword support unit. She draws aggro, and dishes damage, as well helping her party memebers. Just like her personality.

The writing in the games surprises me with how good it is, and while on the surface, HR's dating elements seems weird. It's actually more intimate. You have to Pat attention to what the girls are talking about and knowing how you need to respond. You can catch on where they'd like to go and spend time at. You are more involved with it.

The gameverse has also done something shocking…..it's given Kirito a personality, it's genuinely there and makes him a likable character.

  • Well, SAO engine was created with sex industry in mind(Stated at some point in LN and also solve whole profit plot hole about SAO game). So many things like different underwear models and naked character models do make sense if we keep it in mind. And while in original game such content was blocked by censor, Kayaba probably turned it off since day 1.

  • One of those last points really made think about this: we have all this future technology, this very specific convoluted setting and set of conditions but it's all just used for regular anime bullshit that could happen in any other setting. Inventing this kind of setting just to tell a story about teenage romance with panties and non-consensual nakedness is kinda like fully grown man received superpowers that could help him to reshape the whole world but all he used them on is doing small and petty pranks his childhood bully. That's the level of wasted potential we are talking about here. If he just wanted to do indulgent teenage romance story he should have just done it and dropped all the pretense. All the shit he receives is because he thinks he can write about more complex issues like how players act in online environment without having any real knowledge how it actually works in real world. He's just wasting his time while doing that and all it does is infuriate his readers and distracts them from what clearly is the meat and potato of this series.

To put it other way, he should just make his world more of a fantasy world instead of sci-fi world, even if still had The Nervegear. In fantasy you can just gosh how cool and epic dragons are, in sci-fi you must explain how they fly and breath fire. If course good fantasy world at least hints how it functions but at the same leaving the detailed explanation up for reader's imagination is also seen as a good thing. Nervegear exists, it can kill people, everyone's stuck in fantasy world. Leave it at that, the tech, leave the social issues, just focus on making a fun and sexy adventure in that escapist fantasy

  • I'm now imagining that the theming of the Floors of Aincrad were things like. . .
1-25 – Eastern Nation themed stuff in the Spring, using various regions of Japan/China/India as inspiration for each floor
26-50 – African Themed Floors taking place in Summer. Maybe have a few based on Egypt.
51-75 – Western Nations in Fall themed floors. This is where you'd get stuff like Arthurian Legends, Germanic, Roman, Italian, all that good stuff.
76-100 – Russian/Scandinavian Time in Winter. The End Game, have fun invading these floors of eternal snow.

  • I want to post some conclusions i had made after reading all the ln till the date (im not a professional story-writter guy, im just giving an opinion of what things i notice on the book):

I liked the improvement that is happening on every volume on the book, the characters, a bit of the story (where they usually do a lot of things because they need EXP or some kinda of rewards that kirito remember from being a beta tester) more if we talk about the elf war that is basically the campaign of a mmo… probably of a normal mmo, but with its own touch where you dont need to be from a raze to explore the story, if not you need to be allied to one. It surely needs progression, and i kinda confusing when (SPOILERS) in one of the last books the dark elf that was allied with the black cape killers (i cant remember their names) just interacted with other player's elf. Obviously that place wasnt instanced, but it should make it very difficult to pass the story… literally you need those circunstances. Thats something that not even kirito can understand.

I liked a lot of the characters and how is relationated to the anime or original ln stories, like giving the existence of Liza beford she even interacts with kirito, where she insteracted with another player girl who helped to make her armor, and more of Argo's parts. I remember her inmediatly from only ONE scene of the anime, idk how, but i remember that when i watched that scene i didnt understand who was her. Now we know. Same thing with Kibaou and Lynn, and probably with Diavel, where we knew some relation between him and kirito from the start, where he knew that they two were beta testers.

Probably the best part of sao: the romance between Kirito and Asuna.
Kirito is not even close yet to a normal guy, he needs more deep story about him. We know about why asuna got into sao and who is she in the real life.
They two keeps being a team, or maybe a duo, and yeah, is difficult to make two characters have to get to a romantic relationship between them knowing the end of it, but im seeing that at least Reki is trying to get till that point, he even explained on the new books (maybe a spoiler) that he was a bit "scared" of giving those two a lot of friendly relationship between them, more if they only met each other one or two months ago in the story. At least there is a explanation (sorry if i writed that bad, i dont know that lot of english) about them getting teamed: 1 – because she wants to know more about the game and survive
2- kirito sees potential on her friend wants her to be kinda of the second option if he or the guilds liders die, so people can still have hope on one of the best leaders or players on the game on one future.

    The world:
I like how the first floors were like the first places you met on mmos, but from the high elf floor till the last books it gets a interesting feel and good mechanics for vr mmos, like getting lost in the forest, or even drown because of fatigue on rivers.

The fan service: i… dont really see the necessity of fan service on any anime story because is kinda sexist (something that in my country you can be surely arrestes about), but it has kinda of a lot of fan service, at least those scenes are short… kinda.
Ok, Reki needs to progress on quantity of fan service per book.

So that's my conclusion, I have a lot of other things to figure out like the only moment where Kirito showed emotions at being called a "beater" every time, and how other genres game's terms can mix with the players trapped, etc.
But i didnt want it to be a very long "conclusion".

There are a lot of things to still telling, Reki only writted till floor 5 or 6? I cant remember because i confuse it with the book's volume. But there is a lot to keep progressing on and a lot of things to tell.

  • This is…an old video, but I would like to point out that Kayaba wanted the game to only have melee because, in light of this being a death game, he didn't want players to be able to win by standing in the back and hiding behind others, or sniping mooks from great range. The fear of death is an essential design component, and allowing ranged combat would have weakened it. At least, that's my read on it.

  • Trans was a big missed opportunity in SAO, it would have been great to explore the people who made female characters as they would for non full dive MMO's to regret the decision and being unable to re-roll due to being stuck in the game, and the trans people who love being stuck in the game with the bodies they're actually happy with.
